Mr. Hoang Tran

Structural Engineer, VINCI Group

I am currently nurturing the idea of developing my own business plan in the near future. Pursuing an MBA has equipped me with the essential knowledge and skills to apply to this practical project. This bold vision for the future is the primary motivation that drives Mr. Hoang Tran, Structural Engineer at VINCI Group, to confidently participate in the PSO MBA program.

*It is known that you are currently working as a design and calculation engineer in the construction field. Why did you choose to pursue an MBA instead of furthering your knowledge in the Construction industry?

I highly value individuals who possess in-depth expertise in a specific field. In an era where the economy plays a crucial role in society and affects all aspects of human life, it is essential to gain knowledge in this area. Currently, my work is entirely focused on technical aspects, leaving me with little opportunity to explore the economic field. Therefore, I have decided to pursue an MBA to supplement the economic knowledge I find lacking.

Additionally, I am nurturing the idea of developing my own business plan in the near future. An MBA will provide me with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to apply to this practical project.

*How have you applied the knowledge and skills gained from MBA into practice?

After studying the MBA program at PSO for some time, I have noticed positive changes in my mindset and work skills.

Previously, with my technical background, I faced many challenges in project direction and management. However, thanks to the MBA, I have learned how to organize, plan, and monitor work progress more effectively. Moreover, I have applied this valuable knowledge to manage change in the business environment, develop critical thinking skills, and view problems from multiple perspectives, allowing me to solve issues more efficiently.

One of the most noticeable changes has been in my management skills. Through interactions and learning from industry experts, the MBA program has enhanced my leadership abilities and enabled me to apply what I’ve learned to people management, conflict resolution, and building stronger teams.

In particular, the diverse learning environment at PSO MBA has provided me with in-depth knowledge of Data Analytics. This course has taught me how to analyze data to make more accurate technical decisions, optimize processes, and predict outcomes that deliver the greatest value for the company.

Overall, the MBA program has contributed to my comprehensive development in both knowledge and soft skills, thereby improving my work efficiency, enhancing my personal value, and expanding my career opportunities for the future.

*For you, which instructor has been the most inspiring in your learning journey?

Having a background as a former math student, finance has always been a field I am passionate about. The course “Financial Reports for Decision Making,” taught by Mr. Đoàn Anh Tuấn, left a significant impression on me. His inspiring and approachable teaching style allowed MBA students to grasp concepts quickly, engage in discussions confidently, and easily apply the knowledge in practice. Thanks to his attentive guidance, I was able to acquire comprehensive knowledge related to financial reporting and business analysis.

I also greatly admire Ms. Nguyễn Thị Hoàng Anh, who motivated me in the course “Economics for Business.” Instead of presenting dry economic theories, she consistently provided practical examples that illustrated how the market economy operates.

Another instructor worth mentioning is Ms. Lê Thị Thanh Xuân, who teaches “Contemporary People Management.” We share a common background in engineering, which creates a sense of familiarity and comfort during her classes. She has shown me that a non-traditional background is not a barrier on my path to conquering the MBA.

*What challenges did your background as an engineer present during your MBA studies?

Bringing an engineering background to the MBA classroom felt like exploring a new territory for me. Almost 100% of the knowledge I encountered was unfamiliar and full of challenges. From the very first classes, I noticed a distinct difference in knowledge, skills, and approaches between the fields of economics and engineering. I faced several obstacles in pursuing this program.

Engineering often focuses on solving specific, logical, and detailed problems, while economics requires strategic thinking, viewing issues from multiple perspectives, and considering broader impacts. Rather than fixating on these differences, I adapted my mindset during my studies, honing my ability to reconcile these two opposing elements. I believe this adaptability is one of the key objectives I aimed to achieve while participating in the PSO MBA program.

*What advice would you give to those planning to pursue an MBA, especially for those with a “non-traditional” background like yours?

Pursuing an MBA brings about significant positive changes in thinking and working. Regardless of your background or field, it’s essential to cultivate a flexible mindset. This means being open to change, willing to experiment with new methods, unafraid of failure, and eager to learn from others. Be patient in developing the ability to view issues from multiple perspectives and make strategic decisions based on clearly defined goals.

In my view, studying for an MBA not only enhances management and leadership skills and broadens your horizons, but it also boosts your confidence in facing business challenges and pursuing long-term career objectives. If you feel ready, don’t hesitate to enroll in an MBA program to gain valuable knowledge and experiences on your learning journey.
