Spirit of Self-learning: MBA students need to cultivate it every day

“MBA students need to cultivate a spirit of self-learning every day,” said Mr. Huỳnh Bửu Quang, CEO of Deutsche Bank Vietnam, in the MBA For Success program organized by the ISB Institute.

“The working knowledge within the banking sector is incredibly diverse”

Mr. Quang noted, emphasizing the need for continuous efforts in self-learning and knowledge enhancement every day for MBA students working within the banking sector.
Within the bank itself, there are various departments encompassing characteristics ranging from business, operations, and auditing, to financial analysis, risk management, and more. Furthermore, exposure to diverse client profiles across different sectors offers a new block of knowledge every day for these individuals to learn.
Therefore, to thrive in the banking industry, it’s crucial to seize every learning opportunity from the outset. Mr. Quang recalled his early days as a salesperson for Hong Kong Bank, the predecessor of HSBC, right after graduating. Despite lacking extensive sales experience, he saw it as a golden period to “enrich” himself in terms of knowledge and skills.

Mr. Huynh Buu Quang, Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Bank Vietnam, believes that young people today must constantly cultivate a spirit of self-learning.

In sales, Mr. Quang learned a lot

Sales positions in the banking sector often aren’t as favored among young professionals due to the pressure of KPIs or societal misconceptions. However, after years of experience in sales at Hong Kong Bank, Mr. Quang learned a great deal about engaging with partners, communication skills, and managing sales. He gained a deeper understanding of the market and initiated innovative approaches to develop fitting product processes.

According to Mr. Quang, “The key point, looking back, is always wanting to learn something new.” With this mindset, individuals, regardless of their position, can embrace valuable lessons for personal development. Additionally, it involves actively seeking to understand different areas within the company. For instance, in sales, it’s not just about sales; paying attention to and learning from other departments enriches one’s knowledge.

The spirit of self-learning embraces challenges

“In the early stages of working, I hardly thought about my rights; I just gave my all, did my best, and poured my heart into it. For me, the motivation was wanting to prove that I could do everything.” Mr. Quang eagerly took on tasks, aiming to challenge himself. Now, in a leadership role, he highly appreciates and values young people who possess a similar spirit.

Conclusion

The spirit of self-learning plays a pivotal role in the personal development of every individual. Possessing a mindset unafraid of difficulties and challenges will lead to success in both professional and personal life.
